CHART ANALYSIS
Despite a Best Picture snub from the Golden Globes, Munich is trying to prove that it's still a contender for the Academy Award's top prize. The Steven Spielberg film's #3 debut (just behind lone Oscar nod shoo-in Brokeback Mountain) is a sign that it's still very much in the race.

Felicity Huffman may be solidifying her chances at grabbing a Best Actress nomination for her role in Transamerica. The film changed direction after increasing its per-screen average by nearly $2,000. The opposite may be for true for Judi Dench, whose Mrs. Henderson Presents plunged right off the chart after two weeks at #6.

HOW IT WORKS
"Buzz" is a pretty tough thing to try to measure. But that doesn't stop a statistics-loving boy from giving it a shot.

Using box office ticket sales data, Metacritic scores and user votes from IMDB, I've created a formula that combines popular demand with opinion ratings. The result is a chart that includes quality films (which can only rank highly if they do well in theaters) and seat-fillers (which can only stick around on the chart if they get good reviews).

In other words, these are the films that in the past week have succeeded in enjoying the most positive attention from both critics and audiences.

THE FORMULA
The highest possible Buzz Score is 36.00. A movie's total score is determined by adding up points the following categories:

Average Sales per Theater (10 Points): This number is taken by simply dividing the Average Sales per Theater figure by 1000. Films that exceed an average of $10,000 are assigned the maximum 10 points. Also, films that do not earn more than $1,000 per theater do not qualify for the buzz chart.

Metacritic Score (10 Points): The film's Metacritic score divided by 10.

IMDb Score (10 Points): The film's IMDb score.

Box Office Rank (6 Points): The #1 ranked movie in total box office sales receives 6 points. #2 gets 5.9 points. #3 get 5.8. The pattern continues all the way to #60, which receives 0.1 points.

Additional notes: Movies that only appear in specialty theaters, such as IMAX and specific foreign language theaters, do not qualify. The Positive Buzz Chart is also limited to films that reach the Top 60.
