CHART ANALYSIS
It was a sparse weekend for new releases with only two chart debuts this week. Transamerica, starring Felicity Huffman as a man-turned-woman, enters at a respectable third. Critics have generally liked the film but that fact that the film stars a Desperate Housewife in a daring role certainly helped its profile. Charlize Theron's Aeon Flux barely managed to squeeze onto the chart at #12. The film has gotten terrible reviews, but still drew a decent amount of theater-goers.

Syriana was able to overtake Harry Potter for the top spot on the Buzz chart. In its second week and now in 9 theaters, the controversial look at the oil-business had another amazing average ticket sales per theater.

Chart staple Capote, Good Night and Good Luck. and The Squid and the Whale are holding a steady place in the center of the chart and each film has proven it has deserved its long-standing attention. All three received multiple Independent Spirit Award nominations last week. But with a parade of Oscar-hungry December releases, the trio's chart days may be numbered.

HOW IT WORKS
"Buzz" is a pretty tough thing to try to measure. But that doesn't stop a statistics-loving boy from giving it a shot.

Using box office ticket sales data, Metacritic scores and user votes from IMDB, I've created a formula that combines popular demand with opinion ratings. The result is a chart that includes quality films (which can only rank highly if they do well in theaters) and seat-fillers (which can only stick around on the chart if they get good reviews).

In other words, these are the films that in the past week have succeeded in enjoying the most positive attention from both critics and audiences.

BEST BETS FOR BUZZ
Next week's most likely films to reach the chart:

Brokeback Mountain
Memoirs of a Geisha
Mrs. Henderson Presents
