Jarhead fought its way to the top of the PBC this week despite disappointing critical reviews. The Sam Mendes war film averaged an impressive $11,499 per theater in its debut week. Chicken Little was not-so-surpringly the weekend's box office winner in ticket sales. Unfortunately, the concensus is that Disney's first non-Pixar CGA film doesn't match the quality of its predecessors, landing it at #3 on the chart, behind Capote (which in its sixth week has never ranked lower than #2).
The reissue of Michael Antonioni's The Passenger was the only other chart newcomer in a somewhat stale week at the box office. Actually, this week's chart is probably more of an indication of how weak last week's crop of movies were. Saw II was the only movie of the group to return for a second week.
The only real interesting movement from older films came from The Squid and the Whale, which has increased in critical and audience raves as it's opened in more cities across the country. The movie is two spots up from last week (although it probably would have only moved up one spot if audience-stealer Chicken Little hadn't plucked Wallace and Gromit right off the chart).

"Buzz" is a pretty tough thing to try to measure. But that doesn't stop a statistics-loving boy from giving it a shot.
Using box office ticket sales data, Metacritic scores and user votes from IMDB, I've created a formula that combines popular demand with opinion ratings. The result is a chart that includes quality films (which can only rank highly if they do well in theaters) and seat-fillers (which can only stick around on the chart if they get good reviews).
In other words, these are the films that in the past week have succeeded in enjoying the most positive attention from both critics and audiences.
