After spending three weeks in the #2 spot, George Clooney's Good Night, and Good Luck. finally lays Capote's month-long winning streak to rest. The two films have dominated the PBC for the last few weeks and as long as the films keep crowding theaters, these critical faves may be able to buzz right into Oscar season.
On its first weekend, horror flick Saw II attracted those looking for a holiday scare. The film averaged an amazing $10,758 per theater, the highest average for a widely released film since the debut of the PBC. MeanwhileThe Weather Man found the weekend to be a bit dismal. Its underwhelming critical reaction and ticket sales gave the film a much lower debut than some forecasted, at #9.
Political thriller Paradise Now made in impact in just four theaters over the weekend. Its $12,005 screen average helped the film score the #5 spot in its premiere week.

"Buzz" is a pretty tough thing to try to measure. But that doesn't stop a statistics-loving boy from giving it a shot.
Using box office ticket sales data, Metacritic scores and user votes from IMDB, I've created a formula that combines popular demand with opinion ratings. The result is a chart that includes quality films (which can only rank highly if they do well in theaters) and seat-fillers (which can only stick around on the chart if they get good reviews).
In other words, these are the films that in the past week have succeeded in enjoying the most positive attention from both critics and audiences.

Next week's most likely films to reach the chart:
Jarhead
Chicken Little
The Dying Gaul
Tristam Shandy
