Falling off the chart: Exorcism of Emily Rose, Just Like Heaven, Lord of War

Two films by veteran directors drew big crowds in limited release this week. David Cronenburg's A History of Violence not only averaged $36,856 per theater, but it's also been greatly received by both critics and audiences. Don't be surpised if the film tops the chart again next week when it goes wide.
Roman Polanski's Oliver Twist lands at a strong but distant second, despite mediocre reviews.
Audiences are more into Gwenyth Paltrow's return to the big screen that the critics, and they liked it enough to give Proof the highest buzz of all the films that debuted last weekend. However, last week's charttopper Tim Burton's Corpse Bride still saw enough people walk down the aisle to see the film to give it a fourth place finish this week.
Jodie Foster thriller Flightplan was #1 in ticket sales, but with not-so-sky-high reviews, this one may take a nose dive on the chart next week.

"Buzz" is a pretty tough thing to try to measure. But that doesn't stop a statistics-loving boy from giving it a shot.
Using box office ticket sales data, Metacritic scores and user votes from IMDB, I've created a formula that combines popular demand with opinion ratings. The result is a chart that includes quality films (which can only rank highly if they do well in theaters) and seat-fillers (which can only stick around on the chart if they get good reviews).
In other words, these are the films that in the past week have succeeded in enjoying the most positive attention from both critics and audiences.
