Third / Sister Lovers
by Big Star
Original Release: 1975
Label: Stax
Band frontman Alex Chilton may have had a somewhat of a happy accident with a success of 1975's Third, originally called Sister Lovers. As the British pop band disinegrated to just two original members, Chilton and drummer Jody Stephens, their label was inches from bankruptcy. With a bubbling desperation, Big Star, whose importance continues to be increasingly apparent, recorded their most haphazardly thrown together album. The result is raw, haunting emotion from one of the '70s most polished rock bands. 'Dirty pop' starts here.
