MP3: SLUMBER PARTY

"10-9-8-7-6-5-4" (Kill Rock Stars)
All-girl Detroit garage band Slumber Party release their latest album Musik next month. "10-9-8-7-6-5-4" is a low-energy track that features trancelike vocals and an insistent punk riff.

MP3: TORTOISE

From Tortoise's forthcoming box set of rarities and remixes, this track embodies the electro side of the band's post-rock sound.

MP3: THE HOLD STEADY

"Chips Ahoy" (Pitchfork)
Every music fan has a few bands that produce the confused reaction, "I just don't get it. I just don't understand why so many people think this band is so fucking great." For me, I'm most perplexed by the popularity of The Hold Steady. And after listening to this track from their upcoming album Boys and Girls, I'm still scratching my head.

MP3: BASEMENT JAXX

"Hush Boy" (Insound)
On their first album since 2003's Kish Kash, Basement Jaxx give us this hyperactive club track that overwhelms with its diva vocals, jazz horns, and layers of disco beats. I'm hoping it's not the best that Crazy Itch Radio (available Sept. 12) has to offer.

MP3: CALE PARKS

"Wet Paint" (Polyvinyl)
Aloha band member Cale Parks, who helped give us Some Echoes (one of my most enjoyable listens so far this year), releases his solo CD Illuminated Manuscript stateside on Sept. 26. This ambient electronic song, which is like a hot air ballon ride through a cumulous cloud, appears on the disc.

TOP 100 ROCK & ROLL SINGLES OF ALL TIME: #100 - #81

Before Pitchfork decided to reveal its Top 200 Songs of the 1960s and jam its servers, I'd already planned this week to unleash my Top 100 Rock and Roll Singles of All Time. Perhaps, Hobby Box isn't as much of an indie kid's music authority as Pitchfork, but hey, at least my site works.

The Top 100 Rock and Roll Singles of All Time is a list I revise every two years. One way to look at it: they are the songs that I'd place on a ballot if Rolling Stone or Q asked me to participate in an all-time singles poll. And I've reserved myself to revise my picks biennially.

So here is the first fifth of the 2006 list. I'll be posting the rest of it throughout the next couple of weeks:

100. "Girlfriend" / Matthew Sweet
99. "Nothing Compares 2 U" / Sinead O'Connor
98. "Crazy in Love" / Beyonce
97. "My Generation" / The Who
96. "Girls and Boys" / Blur

95. "Ain't No Mountain High Enough"
Marvin Gaye & Tammy Terrell

94. "Cars" / Gary Numan
93. "Psycho Killer" / Talking Heads
92. "Everyday People" / Sly & The Family Stone
91. "Let's Stay Together" / Al Green

90. "Enjoy the Silence" / Depeche Mode
89. "Like a Prayer" / Madonna
88. "Bridge of Troubled Water" / Simon & Garfunkel
87. "Cannonball" / The Breeders
86. "I Want You Back" / The Jackson Five

85. "Try a Little Tenderness" / Otis Redding
84. "Mo Money, Mo Problems" / Notorious B.I.G., Puff Daddy & Mase
83. "You're So Vain" / Carly Simon
82. "Bang a Gong" / T. Rex
81. "Be My Baby" / The Ronettes

MP3: ANGELA DESVEAUX

"Heartbeat" (Thrill Jockey)
Not surprisingly, Canadian Angela Desveaux names women like Emmylou Harris and Lucinda Williams as her influences. Although this track from her upcoming album Wandering Eyes suggests that she may just be a crispier, poppier version of those two.

MP3: THE MOUNTAIN GOATS

"Woke Up New" (Insound)
The Mountain Goats' strengths have always been John Darnielle's from-the-gut lyrics and his genuine vocal delivery. Qualities that can perhaps be heard more than ever on this track from their new album, Get Lonely (out Aug. 22).

MP3: SWAN LAKE

"All Fires"

Indie megagroup Swan Lake features Dan Bejar (Destroyer, New Pornographers), Spencer Krug (Sunset Rubdown, Wolf Parade), and Carey Mercer (Frog Eyes). This dreamlike track is featured on the band's forthcoming CD, Beast Moans.

From their upcoming album Dark Light Daybreak, here are two dusky-mooded tracks from Athens, GA, band Now It's Overhead (which features Azure Ray's Orenda Fink and Maria Taylor).

MP3: TAP TAP

"100,000 Thoughts" (Catbird)
On this sprightly indie pop track, Bloggers' favorite-of-the-moment Tap Tap is somehow able to conjure up images of merry-go-rounds and field trips to the zoo without coming off like complete wusses. Their new album Lanzafame is available now.

MP3: THE BIG SLEEP

"Murder"
"You Can't Touch the Untouchable"
(TheBigSleep.net)
Maul-you-over psych rock outfit The Big Sleep release Son of the Tiger on Sept. 19. Sample these two tracks layered in deep driving beats and drones.

MP3: THE THERMALS

"A Pillar of Salt" (Sub Pop)
Perhaps if "pop punk" weren't already a term used to describe radio schlock like Fall Out Boy and Blink 182, then it would be the most accurate label for this trio from Portland, OR. This energetic track appears on their forthcoming album The Body, The Blood, The Machine.
