MP3: MATES OF STATE

"Fraud in the '80s". Kori Gardner and Jason Himmel (the married duo who comprise Mates of State) have for years seemed to be on the brink of complete indie pop success. Judging from this superaddictive track from their upcoming album Bring it Back, they may finally be leaping over into the top tier of the indie world. (Barsuk)

MP3: KELLEY STOLTZ

The acclaim for Kelley Stoltz's genre-blending indie pop on 2004's Antique Glow was relatively widespread considering the San Francisco singer/songwriter released in on a local label. Now with Sub Pop, Stoltz will inevitably achieve even greater success with his latest CD, Below the Branches (out Feb. 7). (Sub Pop)

"Memory Collector"
"The Sun Comes Through" (previously appeared on The Sun Comes Through EP)

MP3: CLEARLAKE

"No Kind of Life". Clearlake's anticipated album Amber arrives on Jan. 24. The opening track, "No Kind of Life," opens somewhat dark and haunting yet slowly brightens as the song progresses. It's the perfect score for watching sunrises at the end of a night of partying. (Domino)

MP3: ELBOW

"Forget Myself". When Elbow released their debut Asleep in the Back a few years ago, there was no way not to label them Radiohead-esque. Their latest album Leaders of the Free World fully detaches them from the comparison, developing a matured version of catchy brit pop of the 90s. "Forget Myself" is a full-bodied pleasure. MP3: PRETTY GIRLS MAKE GRAVES

"The Noctural House". From their upcoming album Elan Vital (scheduled for release on April 11), "The Noctural House" is a dark and noisy track that's a perfect representation of the band's multi-layered ambient sound. (Matador)

MP3: THE DUKE SPIRIT

"Cuts Across the Land". Vocalist Leila Moss will remind you Debbie Harry on this title track from The Duke Spirit's upcoming March 7 release, while the music may actually recollect even earlier garage rock bands. (StarTime)

MP3: TELEPATHE

"The March". This NYC band releases their debut EP Farewell Forest on Feb. 7. "The March" combines tribal beats with organic ambience. The strange chemistry on the track is heightened by the fact that the final mix was pared down to a 4-track. (The Social Registry)

MP3: GET HIM EAT HIM

"Exposure". Do As I Tell You is the follow-up EP to Get Him Eat Him's 2005 full-length Geography Cones. The disc is being released by Catbird Records, and only limited quantities will be available. Fortunately, the band's offering the opening track as a downlaod. (GetHimEatHim.com)

MP3: CENTRO-MATIC

"Triggers and Trash Heaps". It appears that the next big breakthrough band in line for 2006 is the Texas band Centro-matic, who are getting a lot of support from Drive-by Truckers' Patterson Hood and buzz from Filter, which has officially declared that the band "rules". This single is off Fort Recovery (out March 7). You decide if it's worth the hype. (Misra)

MP3: TARKIO

"Tristan and Iseult". On Jan. 24, Kill Rock Stars will release Omnibus, which combines material from Tarkio's previous releases, an LP and an EP. The band was fronted by a pre-Decemberists Colin Meloy, who leaned a tinge more toward alt-county in his college days. (Kill Rock Stars)

MP3: FILM SCHOOL

"Pitfalls". Moments of this track, from Film School's forthcoming self-titled CD, may remind you of other eras: the echoey guitars and vocals of '70s psychedelica, the synth lines from '90s electronica, etc. But in the end, the parts combine into something that can only be defined as original. MP3: ROBERT STILLMAN

"Dance 1". Horses, the debut CD from instrumentalist Robert Stillman, will be released next Tuesday. "Dance 1" is like the score to a short film, with Stillman's arrangements both emotive and complex -- a combo that's too rarely pulled off in contemporary jazz. (Mill Pond)
