TOP 100 ROCK & ROLL SINGLES OF ALL TIME: #100 - #81

Before Pitchfork decided to reveal its Top 200 Songs of the 1960s and jam its servers, I'd already planned this week to unleash my Top 100 Rock and Roll Singles of All Time. Perhaps, Hobby Box isn't as much of an indie kid's music authority as Pitchfork, but hey, at least my site works.

The Top 100 Rock and Roll Singles of All Time is a list I revise every two years. One way to look at it: they are the songs that I'd place on a ballot if Rolling Stone or Q asked me to participate in an all-time singles poll. And I've reserved myself to revise my picks biennially.

So here is the first fifth of the 2006 list. I'll be posting the rest of it throughout the next couple of weeks:

100. "Girlfriend" / Matthew Sweet
99. "Nothing Compares 2 U" / Sinead O'Connor
98. "Crazy in Love" / Beyonce
97. "My Generation" / The Who
96. "Girls and Boys" / Blur

95. "Ain't No Mountain High Enough"
Marvin Gaye & Tammy Terrell

94. "Cars" / Gary Numan
93. "Psycho Killer" / Talking Heads
92. "Everyday People" / Sly & The Family Stone
91. "Let's Stay Together" / Al Green

90. "Enjoy the Silence" / Depeche Mode
89. "Like a Prayer" / Madonna
88. "Bridge of Troubled Water" / Simon & Garfunkel
87. "Cannonball" / The Breeders
86. "I Want You Back" / The Jackson Five

85. "Try a Little Tenderness" / Otis Redding
84. "Mo Money, Mo Problems" / Notorious B.I.G., Puff Daddy & Mase
83. "You're So Vain" / Carly Simon
82. "Bang a Gong" / T. Rex
81. "Be My Baby" / The Ronettes
