HOBBY BOX'S TOP 50 ALBUMS OF 2005 (#50-#26)

My top albums may be coming out a bit later in the year than usual, but it was particularly tough narrowing down my picks for 2005. So much so that I decided to rank all the way up to #50. (In the past, I've only gone up to #25 with a few honorable mentions.) I'll have the top 25 posted by the end of the day. Promise.

50. TIM FITE / Gone Ain't Gone
49. DIRTY THREE / Cinder
48. DEATH CAB FOR CUTIE / Plans
47. CLOUD CULT / Advice from a Hippopotamus
46. XIU XIU / La Foret

33. GORILLAZ / Demon Days
32. BRIGHT EYES / I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning
31. ROGUE WAVE / Descended Like Vultures
30. THE GO-BETWEENS / Oceans Aparts
29. FIONA APPLE / Extraordinary Machine
28. EELS / Blinking Lights and Other Revelations
27. SUPERGRASS / Road to Rouen
26. ARCHITECTURE IN HELSINKI / In Case We Die

To give you a hint about the artists who topped this year's list of best albums, there are 10 artists in the top 25 who have made the Year-End List in previous years. However, the top 3 albums are held by artists who are new to The LARRY Page Year-End Lists this year.

MP3: I LOVE YOU BUT I'VE CHOSEN DARKNESS

"According to Plan". Austin band I Love You But I've Chosen Darkness gets dark and dancy on this track from the forthcoming album Fear Is On Our Side. You'll be able to hear whether the rest of the CD is as '80s goth club friendly on March 7 when the albums hits stores. (Secretly Canadian)

MP3: EAST RIVER PIPE

"What Does T.S. Eliot Know About You?". East River Pipe's F.M. Cornog provides subtle wit that is a perfect compliment to his folky twee pop. This track is from his upcoming album What are You On?. (Toolshed)

WOXY.com will be counting down their top 97 releases of 2005 starting tomorrow at Noon - 4pm, then continuing at the same time on Thursday. Last year's #1 was Franz Ferdinand. I'd be surprised if they didn't choose Sujfan Stevens as their top pick this year.

With Love and Squalor. Listen to three tracks from We are Scientists' new album (released January 10), including the catchy single "Nobody Move, Nobody Get Hurt" that's been the main catalyst for the Brooklyn band's hype. (Myspace)

VIDEO STREAM: THE FUTUREHEADS

They aren't scheduled to put out a full-length follow-up to their self-titled debut until mid-2006, but The Futureheads have released a UK-only single called "Area" to tease fans like me. The track's a little less mathematical and more akin to the sound of their post-rock/new wave influences. Here's the video:

MP3: PEARLS AND BRASS

This Central Pennsylvania band throws it back to the '70s with their heavy blues-infused art rock. The band recently signed to Drag City and will be releasing their album The Indian Tower next year. (Drag City / Audiofile)

"The Tower"
"The Face of God"

MP3: STELLASTARR*

"Sweet Troubled Soul (Remix)". The Stellastarr* Harmonies for the Haunted single "Sweet Troubled Soul" (one of my Top 25 Singles of 2005) gets the remix treatment from former Smashing Pumpkin James Iha. This version is pretty true to the original -- just a little more echoey with a few synth lines added here and there. (RCA)

MP3: ARIEL PINK

"Oceans of Weep". Animal Collective's Paw Tracks label continues to rerelease the ethereal work of Ariel Pink. House Arrest, previously only available on a self-released CD-R, will be in stores next month. Here's a whimsical dive under the surface that appears on the album. (Audiofile)

"New Drug Queens". This quick, snarling robo-punk track is from Pink Mountaintops' upcoming release Axis of Evol. (Jagjaguwar)

MP3: THE TELEVISION PERSONALITIES

In February, British cult favorites The Television Personalities will be releasing their first album in 11 years on Domino UK. The band's frontman Dan Treacy reformed TVP last year and has been sporatically releasing some of the material on the internet. With the exception of the title track, I'm not sure if all these quirky, melodic tracks will appear on My Dark Place. But it'll surely give you a taste of their 21st century take on their garagy new wave sound. (A Day in Heaven)

"My Dark Places"
"I Hope He's Everything You Wanted Me To Be"
"May You Dream the Sweetest Dreams"

MP3: LOVE IS CHEMICALS

The indie-pop approach of San Francisco's Love is Chemicals is reminiscent of pioneers like Yo La Tengo and Pavement. Yet the band's strong melodies stand out despite a deficiency in ingenuity. Here are three demo versions of tracks from their self-released, self-titled debut. (LoveIsChemicals.net)

"Claw Your Sweater"
"Everyone is in on It"
"A Portrait of Your Post-Apocalyptic Son"

MP3: THE NATIONAL TRUST

"It's Just Cruel". Disco, anyone? The National Trust are the Thrill Jockey interpretation of '70s glitz and funk. This track is from their forthcoming album Kings and Queens.(Thrill Jockey)

MP3: ELEFANT

MP3: CASSETTES WON'T LISTEN

Some might have thought that emotive electronica had already been worn out by bands like Four Tet and Postal Service, but NYC's Cassettes Won't Listen have a refreshingly different approach. Their sound is much more indie than electro. It even reminds me a bit of some somber alternapop bands from the mid-90s. (Dope Lotus)

"Cutting Balloons"
"Lunch for Breakfast"

HOBBY BOX'S TOP 25 SINGLES OF 2005 (#25-#11)

I'm still putting together my year-end "2005: The Year in Music" section, but with all the lists already floating around the blogosphere, I couldn't resist posting some of my choices. I've never ranked singles all the way to 25 before. My increased love for the art of single-making is perhaps a reflection of how the mp3 players have changed the way we listen to music. Then again, maybe it was just one of those great years with plenty of songs that made me want to reach for the repeat button.
