REVIEW: CASTANETS

First Light's Freeze (Asthmatic Kitty) Like last year's Cathedral, Castanets' latest release First Light's Freeze is gorgeously experimental. Frontman Raymond Raposa carefully crafts each track, creating a somber and unpredictable songbook that can best be summed up as atmospheric Americana. Full of subtle sound textures as well as huge unexpected shifts in intensity, every moment of the album feels meticulously constructed. The resulting structure is one that is beautifully unified from top to bottom, but that is at the same time heartbreakingly fragile.
