OSCAR PREDICTIONS
|
Best Actor
Frontrunner:
Daniel Day-Lewis, Gangs of New York
In the hunt:
Adrien Brody, The Pianist
Jack Nicholson, About Schmidt
Longshots:
Michael Caine, The Quiet American
Nicolas Cage, Adaptation
Brody, Day-Lewis and Nicholson remain in close competition, but Gangs of the New York's Bill the Butcher has a slight edge.
This category tends to favor established actors, so as a relative newcomer, Brody may have to wait another year. And while Jack is certainly an Academy favorite, About Schmidt wasn't.
|
Best Actress
Frontrunner:
Renee Zellweger, Chicago
In the hunt:
Nicole Kidman, The Hours
Julianne Moore, Far From Heaven
Longshots:
Diane Lane, Unfaithful
Salma Hayek, Frida
The Best Actress category has gone to Hollywood prom queens in recent years (Paltrow, Roberts, Berry), and Golden Globe winner Kidman has a chance to continue the trend. But I'm giving Zellweger the edge for winning the SAG. Voters love to go for the choice that will jump up and down and nearly pee in her gown.
|
Best Supporting Actor
Frontrunner:
Chris Cooper, Adaptation
In the hunt:
Christopher Walken, Catch Me if You Can
Longshots:
Paul Newman, Road to Perdition
John C. Reilly, Chicago
Ed Harris, The Hours
Chris Cooper is the closest thing to a lock in any of the acting categories. Of his competitors, he is the only one to get a respectable amount of screen time and to really show is acting chops as well. Walken won the SAG but the guild tends to favor veterans and box office moneymakers.
|
Best Supporting Actress
Frontrunner:
Meryl Streep, Adaptation
In the hunt:
Catherine Zeta-Jones, Chicago
Julianne Moore, The Hours
Longshots:
Kathy Bates, About Schmidt
Queen Latifah, Chicago
Streep may get nominated all the time, but lately, she hasn't really been a contender to actually take home the prize. But with a beautifully complicated performance in Adaptation, she has a great chance this year. Zeta-Jones may have won SAG, but she didn't have to compete against Golden Globe-winning Streep.
|
Best Director
Frontrunner:
Rob Marshall, Chicago
In the hunt:
Martin Scorsese, Gangs of New York
Pedro Almodovar, Talk to Her
Longshots:
Roman Polanski, The Pianist
Stephen Daltrey, The Hours
Marshall's glitzy direction in his very first feature film has already earned him a Directors Guild of America win, which historically means an Oscar win as well. But you can't count out Scorsese, who has never won the Best Director award. He just might garner enough votes for his lifetime achievement to win him a prize for a mediocre film.
|
Best Picture
Frontrunner:
Chicago
Longshots:
The Hours
Gangs of New York
The Pianist
Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers
It's Miramax's Golden Globe-winning musical versus Miramax's Golden-Globe-winning drama this year. While both received all the expected nomitions plus a few more, there's no doubt that Producers Guild of America taker Chicago will be bringing home the big one.

TOP TEN OF THE YEAR
Toward the year's end, buzz was swirling around for an unusually large crop of films. Many of them turned out to be big disappointments. See which ones deserved all their acclaim.
HONORABLE MENTIONS
Making the top ten is no joke. Films I love get pushed off the list every year. Here are the movies that just missed the cut and that I'd just feel too guilty to ignore completely.
GREAT PERFORMANCES
Sure, I appreciate the traditional award-worthy cry-my-face-off scenes, the performances that make dramas, well, dramatic. But this year it was actors in comedic roles that ruled.
OSCAR GUIDE
As arbitrary as the Oscars prove they are every year, I can't help keeping track of the race. Check out my take on the list of nominees and view my predictions of the winners.
PREVIOUS LISTS
Did you love Cider House Rules? Do you have cravings for Chocolat? Sorry, but you won't find them on my year-end film lists.
